Moll Flanders

Your Comments About This Movie!

July 1996

The "thoughtful viewers" that you think this movie should appeal to should be warned that Pen Densham borrowed NOTHING from Defoe save the title. I'm so very glad that you enjoyed this film, but if you haven't read the book, let me tell you that an actual adaptation of the novel would have been incredibly better. This film is only the palest of copies of the rich world of Moll Flanders. The fascinating, complex heroine of the novel is reduced to the standard stereotype of the wronged woman making her way in a cruel world. Defoe's protagonist is not so squeaky clean, but she is infinitely more interesting.
