Three top awards went to women behind the camera at the 78th Venice Film Festival that ended Sept 11. The Golden Lion went to Audrey Diwan’s abortion drama “Happening” in what jury president Bong Joon Ho deemed a “unanimous decision". The film is about a student in provincial France, Anamaria Vartolome, who realizes she is pregnant during the countdown to her final examinations. The film comes at a time when abortion rights are being hotly debated in the US.

After a 12 year absence from feature filmmaking Jane Campion does it again with a Silver Lion for The Power of the Dog at Venice based on a 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. At the press conference with cast and Campion said that the “climate has changed” for female driven films. As for The Power of a Dog she remarked that she “doesn’t calculate in terms of gender but thought it was an amazing piece of literature”. Venice does not have the same criteria for films as Cannes that a film must first open in the theatres not online. Netflix had the budge that Campion felt she needed to express her vision and regards them as the Italian banking family the Medici’s. Best Screenplay for first-time writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal for “The Lost Daughter.” Gyllenhaal revealed that she has “always been a director and didn't feel entitled to admit it to herself”. “The Lost Daughter" (2021- Greece-US-UK-Isr) based on one of anonymous author Elena Ferrante's four part "Neapolitan Novels" - "The Story of the Lost Child" (2014).

Jamie Lee Curtis received the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award on Sept 8 at the festival. David Gordon Green's "Halloween Kills" was screened based on John Carpenter's Halloween from 1978. Italian thriller horror or "giallo" from the late 60's and 70's is world renowned. One particular focus is on the sexuality and psyche of a vulnerable woman and Laurie Strode and the Strode women - daughter and granddaughter -- join her and other survivors in a vigilante hunt for Michael in this latest edition to the franchise. Curtis said that “Halloween Kills and her partnership with Laurie Strode—"launched and sustained her career” upon receiving her award. She also esteemed Italian Cinema for honoring a genre and accepted the award “on behalf of Laurie and all the courageous heroines of the world who stand tall in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and refuse to yield.”

Chilean director Pablo Larrain and Kristen Stewart were on hand for the debut of Spencer at Venice. Larrain calling Stewart a "miracle" made her wince. The film operates around the "mystery" of Diana Spencer and the projections those who didn't know her made. Pablo Larrain's vision was to "make a film his mother would like", a film that took three days to make, a visual choreography set to Jonny Greenwood though when it was filmed, the set was silent. But larger than Larrain’s mother is Diana and references to Anne Boleyn beheaded for treason, 500 years ago.
